The American Association of Dental Consultants has declared amalgam safe for fillings in teeth. Given that they work in the most litigious society on the planet, it’s probably safe to presume the findings have been tested beyond any reasonable doubt.
A woman recently asked me if she should continue practising yoga during her pregnancy. My immediate reaction was that of course she should. But I’m neither an obstetrician nor a yoga instructor, and there are few things more dangerous than advice from someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

So, in the interests of keeping you safely informed, I took a couple of friends out for a drink and got them to pay me back with advice. One of these friends is a consultant obstetrician and the other is an experienced yoga instructor. This is what they told me:

The basic idea behind Brain Training is to give yourself a mental work-out using simple mathematical, visual and language problems. According to Nintendo, research using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has shown that reading aloud and performing rapid calculations work increases blood supply to important areas of the brain, making them work better. So it’s no surprise that Brain Training prominently features these tasks. The manual points out that none of the exercises is difficult but you have to complete them as quickly as possible. The system is designed to be fun and simple to operate (so getting it set up doesn’t constitute the first problem) So far so good.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth – covering the tooth to restore its shape and size. When cemented in place, a crown fully encases the portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line. They can be used to strengthen a tooth, to improve its appearance, or both.

In the previous article in this series I told you how watching a TV game show shocked me into setting out to improve my memory because I couldn’t answer questions that would have been obvious to me a few years ago. Today we’re going to look at how playing games can improve your ability to access the information that’s already in your head.

Essentially, memory is the ability to retrieve on demand the information stored in our brains. For most of us, this becomes increasingly difficult as we get older (i.e. as we move out of our early 20s!) But it's not difficult to improve your memory and access the data you have worked so hard to acquire over the years. All it takes is a little bit of time spent doing specific things - things you'll enjoy.
